Weather Forecast Today Live News Updates: Several parts of north India including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand are reeling from freezing temperatures and snowfall in the hills as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of of cold to severe cold wave conditions. Mercury levels also dipped in Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.
Fresh snowfall in several places today: While Kashmir is experiencing intense cold conditions, fresh snowfall was recorded last night in the tourist resort of Sonamarg and a few other areas in the higher reaches of the valley. The maximum temperature in Srinagar on Monday settling over six degrees below normal for this time of the season. Further, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Hemkund Sahib in Garhwal Himalayas and Munsiyari in Kumaon region received fresh snowfall intensifying cold throughout Uttarakhand. Mussoorie, Dhanolti and Chakrata also received snowfall.
Heavy rain alert in Chennai, other Tamil Nadu districts and Puducherry: Several parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for heavy rainfall conditions in the next two days. Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore districts and Puducherry are likely to receive heavy rain today and Wednesday, as per the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai. According to the RMC, this is due to a weakened depression over the Bay of Bengal becoming a well-marked low-pressure area. It is likely to reach the southwest Bay of Bengal near the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts around Tuesday.
It was a foggy morning in the national capital on Tuesday with the minimum temperature settling at 9.9 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average, the Met office said.
According to the India Meteorological Department, a light drizzle is likely during the day and the maximum temperature is expected to settle around 19 degrees Celsius.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 398 in the ‘very poor’ category. It was 406 on Monday, the Central Pollution Control Board said.
An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good,’ 51-100 ‘satisfactory,’ 101-200 ‘moderate,’ 201-300 ‘poor,’ 301-400 ‘very poor,’ and 401-500 ‘severe.’ The humidity levels stood at 100 per cent at 8.30 am, the IMD said. PTI

They said light snowfall was recorded last night in the tourist resort of Sonamarg and a few other areas in the higher reaches of the valley.
The fall in mercury led to the freezing of water supply lines even as a thin layer of ice covered the surface of several water bodies.

At least 177 roads, including three national highways, were closed in Himachal Pradesh following snowfall in several districts, officials said on Tuesday.
Snowfall was recorded in the Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti and the higher reaches of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba and Sirmaur districts.
A second consecutive day of snowfall has led to an increase in tourist inflow amid hope on a white Christmas.
Shimla Hotel and Tourism Stakeholders’ Association president MK Seth told PTI that hotel occupancy in Shimla was at more than 70 per cent.
The snowfall led to a 30-percentage point increase in room bookings, he added. – PTI
Cold wave has gripped Rajouri district lying alongside the Line of Control, news agency PTI said today as Jammu and Kashmir reels under freezing temperatures.
The bone-chilling cold continued throughout Monday night as well the minimum temperatures also settled below normal.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius on Monday night — down three degrees from the previous night, the meteorological department said.
Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore among others including some north coastal Tamil Nadu district, and Puducherry are likely to receive heavy rain over the next two days.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, issued the alert for today and Wedneday. Thunderstorms are likely at one or two places in the rest of the State and Puducherry and Karaikal areas on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The sky remained overcast throughout the day at many places in Uttarkhand including Dehradun which also received a drizzle. Temperatures dropped sharplyintensifying cold conditions. People were seen sitting around bonfires along the roadside to warm themselves.
